Why are you running for Mayor?

Because I’m not done yet. I love Pasadena. I love to serve. We’ve accomplished so much these past 4 years with infrastructure, drainage  and redevelopment. This city has so much potential to be even greater than it already is and I look forward to being able to continue that progress.

Pasadena is the 2nd largest city in Harris County with more than 1000 city employees and a multimillion-dollar budget. What qualifications, job training and/or volunteer experiences prepare you to serve as the leader for Pasadena?

I’ve been serving all my life. As a Houston Police Officer, as a City Councilman, as a Police Officer Union representative, as a church volunteers and now as Mayor I’ve had the opportunity and preparation it takes to be a successful leader. After Hurricane Harvey, the pandemic and Winter Storm Uri, we are prepared for most anything. Through all of this, our budget has remained solid. We’ve actually been able to add to our fund balance.

What are your top priorities and if elected, what is the first thing you would do in your first 60 days?

My top 3 priorities as always: Public Safety, enhancing city services, job creation through continued infrastructure and redevelopment. In my first 60 days, I would continue to work with my team of professionals to keep these wheels in motion and keep the city moving forward.

Our city is mostly developed and in order to grow, the city will have to redevelop. How would you facilitate redevelopment? What tools (a TIRZ, Chapter 380 agreements, municipal bonds, livable community funding, management districts, grants) would you support to assist with redevelopment?

We’re doing that now. We’re working with our EDC. We’ve got many things in the works. The Richey Street Redevelopment, including the Business Enhancement Grant Program. The Shaw Street Redevelopment, which I like to call our new “Warehouse District”. Enhancing our Convention Center Grounds will support our Pasadena Strawberry Festival and the Pasadena Rodeo. The area around City Hall, I like to call our Municipal Complex, is coming together. With that cleaned up corner and the plans I have for the mall area…Historic Pasadena will see its first revitalization in decades when I’m re-elected. Every tool is on the table and it will take strong leadership to make sure all council members have the information they need to pass ordinances that will benefit the entire city.

Pasadena Loves Local is an initiative focused on supporting local business and encouraging all citizens to choose local to benefit our community. In your opinion, what can be done to improve the quality of life in Pasadena so that it is a great place for people to choose to live, work and play.

I’m glad you asked that question. We always want to make things better in Pasadena, however, I think we already offer much more than any surrounding cities. Our city services are superior (2x week trash pickup, beautiful parks, great neighborhood associations and civic groups) Our police department has a strong community presence and are loved by our citizens…and that goes both ways. Our volunteer fire department is second to none, with incredible response times. As a matter of fact, Yelp and Zillow recently ranked Pasadena in one of the Top 5 most underrated suburbs in the country.

Why are you running for Mayor?

I love the city of Pasadena. I am deeply rooted in the city. I am a born and raised resident of Pasadena. I have worked several years for the city in many different departments; subsequently, I started and continue to operate my business in the city. My family and I live in this lovely city. My wife and I have 3 kids that are attending Pasadena ISD schools. I want them to live in a better Pasadena. Year after year, I see the same things that have not been improved in our city and continue to hear empty promises from those running to lead the city. From education and youth development, housing & neighborhood improvements, infrastructure & sustainability, police & safety, and the list goes on. I’m concerned with the direction the city is headed and frustrated with the slow process of the government. There is a need for change and growth in the city. I am passionate about serving the citizens of Pasadena and I have the confidence that I can address the issues of Pasadena.

Pasadena is the 2nd largest city in Harris County with more than 1000 city employees and a multimillion-dollar budget. What qualifications, job training and/or volunteer experiences prepare you to serve as the leader for Pasadena?

I started my business over 10 years ago in this great city. Revenue, employment, industry relationships, continue to grow and expand. With that being said, I see my position like similar to mayor of the city. My vision to promote and grow my business is the same vision that I have for the city of Pasadena. Like the growth of my business, I expect there to be obstacles, but with hard work, I know that there will be positive results. I have the confidence that I can address the issues of Pasadena given the work that I have experienced with my business and my work within the city. I have worked with several departments for the city of Pasadena and understand the moving parts of this city. I would need to work with and engage city government with the city residents to listen, understand, and invest for the future. My business experience in working with my employees, clients, partners, and understanding their needs through frequent and active communication and investing allowed me to thrive. I want to do the same for Pasadena. I love Pasadena and have proven that with my local investments and frequent community work.

What are your top three priorities, and if elected, what is the first thing you would do in your first 60 days?

My priorities would be infrastructure, education, and safety. To be a destination city in Texas, we need to rebuild and improve our aging infrastructure. There is an unequal allocation of city services that include broken sidewalks, faulty drainage, and pockmarked streets. The infrastructure of our city is key to the long-term well-being of Pasadena. We must ensure that resources are leveraged and used in ways that benefit Pasadena’s residents for years to come. Second, I believe that every student in Pasadena should have access to a high-quality education that prepares each child for college or a career. I want to govern a relationship between the city and the school district for an intervention of support of Pasadena students. Through a coordination of city services in response to family needs, we can lay the groundwork to make a difference. Lastly, I want us to live in a safe city. Issues of safety encompass more than policing, and that to make the city as safe as we want it to be, we will have to address more than “crime.” We will have to tackle issues related to job development, job readiness, grade-level reading, and college preparedness, to name a few.

Our city is mostly developed, and in order to grow, the city will have to begin to redevelop. How would you facilitate redevelopment? What tools (TIRZ, chapter 380 agreements, municipal bonds, livable community funding, management districts, grants) would you support to assist with redevelopment?

I plan to use several resources for Pasadena’s infrastructure redevelopment and improvement. Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) is one of those tools that will allow us to revitalize parts of Pasadena and establish a revenue stream by facilitating new city or private initiated investments to develop a consistent, improved look for Pasadena and its infrastructure. The facilitation of new projects will provide neighborhood enhancements, street repairs, parks and trails, flood control, and many others. I will assign a committee to make recommendations to myself and City Council for the focused areas of improvements needed in Pasadena. Subsequently, a project plan and reinvestment budget needs will be created to begin this long-term effort. Pasadena is an incredible and beautiful city; however, I envision greater growth, potential, and vitality for this city.

“Pasadena Loves Local” is an initiative focused on supporting local business and encouraging all citizens to choose local to benefit our community. In your opinion, what can be done to improve the quality of life in Pasadena so that it is a great place for people to choose Pasadena to live, work and play?

We need uniformity. Parts of Pasadena are looking and doing great; however, to flourish and have continuous progress, Pasadena as a whole must be uniformed with success and attractiveness. Neighborhoods need restoration by activating vacant spaces, development on neighborhood streets by involving local businesses, and creating job opportunities for city residents, which can help revitalize vacant neighborhood storefronts. Business incentives can be provided for local businesses to make external improvements to better attract visitors and display economic strength of the city. Last and most importantly, it’s about the residents of Pasadena and understanding their needs. As mayor, I work for the people and must be responsive to the needs and aspirations of the citizens of Pasadena. When the people love their city and see opportunity, they tend to stay and build their lives in that city. I want to make Pasadena a blossoming city that the people love.
